Well that's quite surreal. Woke up at 1am needing to turn over, nothing more complicated than that. Managed to get flat on my back but then prevaricated about the second half of the turn as it was likely to hurt and I wasn't yet desperate for the loo.
And remembered at that point that I hadn't replied to Prof's right hand woman Linda about the appointment with Prof she'd suggested on Mon.
So texted her to say yes – and at 1.05am she replied. Quite bizarre – thought only pain losers like me were up at that time. Anyway, she said she would look into me having a sitting MRI scan – to avoid the need for me having to lie on a flat scanner bed, where I've got stuck screaming previously, unable to get back up again. Also asked her for a back doc to review the scan as we are past the point of me having localised painkillers only – I need to know what's wrong with it (it's been over a week now and is ferocious) before I go ahead with treatment.
It's now 1.16am and I need to put this phone down and try to get up. Oh bollocks…
Coped with the rest of the night and just made it downstairs in time for Lyds to appear at 10.30. Great timing as god bless her, she then drove me to the scan on the Cromwell Road and waited for me to reappear. Very handy scanner – strapped on to a white chair between padded walls and the scanning lady even had a head bar that I could rest my forehead on throughout – slept through most of it, bonus.
Back to Parkside to see Prof at 1.30pm. Said he was happy with progress in mouth but I need to do another 25 doses of Aciclovir, lucky Mr H duly despatched to buy more yoghurt.
On the back pain, all he could say was 'I'm so sorry, you've been so unlucky'. You are not kidding …. so I'm now seeing the guy who did my back op tomorrow at 2.40pm. And I am literally counting the hours. I'm wondering if another vertebra has collapsed, but guess I will find out tomorrow. Prof did press his finger gently on my ilio sacral 'spot' and I shot out of the chair, so could that be the source of the pain?
21 hours to go and hoping to have an answer, swiftly followed by whatever is needed to mend this. Suspect it will be highly unpleasant so am nervous already but we will see.
On the upside, our nice lamps and side tables arrived today from Porta Romana. Look really good, although it means my much loved globe now has to go and live in the office. One day I might even make it back in there myself…
Hawksey, love him, is making 'plain pasta' in the kitchen for me. 'Would you like some courgette / peas / onion / lardons / chorizo (chorizo – bleuuurgh ??!!) in it?' – nope thanks, just plain.
Keep your eyes peeled – if anyone spots my appetite while you're out and about, please could I have it back x

are you a marmite fan or not? Nigella has a great marmite pasta recipe – well it’s hardly a recipe… marmite and pasta! But a nice way to lift the plainness without any bits…
