Hats off to the girls for a top belated birthday night out this Thursday – you know I'm a total sucker for secret bars, and we managed to break into another cracking one this week.
When I say 'break into' – its one of those moments when you have to love the anonymity of email. Greeners got in touch with Cam, one of the 'flatmates' (the bar concept is that you come and drink in an apartment, take pretty much whatever they've got on the menu, and are sort of hosted by the 'flatmates') and booked us in. Little did he know, the poor sod, that we are about 25 years older than the rest of his somewhat cooler and sexier punters! But he did at least let the grannies in for a drink or two.
Anyway – was a really cool place (and yes, I am aware that even using the word cool probably makes me massively non-cool, but hey ho). Up two flights of vertiginous stairs, barman in black with yellow bowler hat and braces, film wall being projected onto, drinks menu glued into some dirty magazine, a weird 'large cupboard' at the end of the room that seemed to have a dozen Asian people tucked inside it, music from the 80s (been gone so long its now back in fashion!) and a right bloody hoot. And you'd never know it was there – right by Notting Hill Gate tube, one tiny 'yellow door' sandwiched between a phone shop and some other grotty outlet and with only a large bouncer – with yellow bowtie – lurking at the bottom so you vaguely know you're in the right spot.
Been open 4 weeks and well worth a visit – hilarious.
