H’s birthday – part 1

This week heralded the last birthday for Mr H that starts with the number 5 – eek!!! Can hardly believe that this time next year I'll be married to a 60 year old, surely neither possible nor legal when I am only 27 still??

The lovely Sadler family from next door came round for Sunday cream tea – scones and instructions as to whether the jam or cream goes on first, Cornwall vs Devon style, care of Hawksey – bearing a very nice chocolate cake to kick off birthday week.

Then it was his actual birthday on Tuesday – Maddie being very helpful in ripping the paper off his presents and giving each card a quick chew as he opened them. This year's theme was mainly around bread baking – H's new thing – and the garden, which is looking waaaaay better after quite a lot of effort (mostly H's to be fair!). He's even painted the low wall a nice shade of sage green, a major break from the norm as everything else in the house is one of the fifty shades of grey… Plus he'll be off to meet the Wimbledon Beekeepers in June on a taster day, well he does like his honey. His mate Rich will come too, so it's just another excuse for them to drink cider, most likely..

And we somehow did make it out to his birthday dinner at Chez Bruce that evening, despite me feeling dodgy (still!) from this sodding endless cough/cold/splutterfest. Hopefully the last time I'll be driving us to a birthday meal out, but I willingly volunteered as not feeling on top form. At least I didn't throw up from coughing till midnight that eve, rather a waste of a very good aubergine / pigeon / creme brûlée / cheese dinner.

At least the birthday boy had a fine eve – and a very liquid one at that – he's so lucky not to get hangovers, especially as he'd been out with the boys the night before, and came up the stairs at 3am.. My booze tolerance got up and legged it some years back, how I remember the good old days of half a dozen cocktails and room for more….

We had to bin the planned trip to Richmond for brunch and a visit to the Poppy Factory (yep, pretty much the only activity on 27th March that I could find!) as I was still a bit blurgh, but there's a special dinner planned tonight to keep the celebrations going, little does he know… x
