Yes, you read it right – that is classical as in classical music. And yes – us! But if you were hoping to see something terribly intelligent and niche about the world of classical music, stop reading now – this was a night out to hear the popular 'toons' and a v good one it was too.
Helped by having seats right at the front of the Royal Albert Hall – what you miss in seeing the full spectacle around the hall you gain by seeing the veins popping on the conductor's head as he desperately tried to remember his introductory lines for each piece, as this was the opening night.
Okay, so I could probably have done without all the operatic arias, that being my audio nemesis, but it was still a very good eve, good pace, the Royal Philharmonic orchestra as well as The Royal Choral Society doin' the singing', the British Imperial Military Band delivering the oom pa pa, and a smattering of dancers and sword waving fellas chucking a further bit of colour. Add in endless lighting effects, indoor fireworks, some cannons going off that scared the crap out of us and a pile of balloons and streamers at the end and it was def a classical concert with a difference.
Next time I just need to know the words to Land of Hope and Glory, but at least we had splashed out the very necessary £1 for two Union Flags to wave. Felt like a slight nob but among 5,000 others it worked out fine..
H is still playing Nessun Dorma on his phone this morning – think he had quite a good night too x
