Ajanta Caves

We were planning on going to Goa, but randomly saw a brilliant Joanna Lumley documentary a few months back that made us rearrange our India trip plans.

And that’s why we found ourselves at the Ajanta Caves today. Discovered by a Brit in the early 1800s while he was out hunting tigers – a huge horseshoe shaped complex of caves and carvings in a rock face in the middle of nowhere. Best known for its amazing frescos-style pictures that have somehow survived centuries. And a place that was officially Really Bloody Hot to visit. Note to self – 43 degrees is not the temp of choice for walking on heat-emanating rocks. Only thing that nearly cooled me down was a very near miss of being pissed on by a huge monkey in a tree above my head as I paused to take a photo. Wondered where the mini flood by my left flip-flop came from…

A few pix to whet your cavey whistles… Apparently these aren’t ‘as good’ as the ones we are seeing on our last day tomorrow, so be warned – more crumbly rocks and shots of two very sweaty shiny people to follow x
