Sunday heralded the very final Aces hockey club bash. After 40 or so years the club (well, the one team that we've managed to field by hook or by crook over all these years) has finally closed its doors (not that we really had any, as we were a homeless roving Club!)
About 35 of old Aces – some older than others – rolled out to 22 Dora for the final hurrah, a party to spend the last coins in the Aces coffers. Always fab to see some old chums – dressed in our Aces colours of pink & blue – and to put a few faces to names of those who were in Aces folklore before my time. There was a dog and a toddler (care of Sophie) at one end of the age spectrum and a chap called Mike in a wheelchair at the other end, we pretty much covered the lot.
A little team of Party Planners shared the load, sorting the food (Uzbek caterers!), drinks, decorations, budget management, cake ordering, photo gathering etc. You can only imagine the decibel levels that accompanied these pics…
Douglas our 86 (!!) year old Umpire of many decades stood up and said a few words, smartly dressed in his suit and Jo who was Captain for many years did likewise. Still relieved that Doug managed to reverse his car – complete with temporary yellow tyre – back off the drive and homewards without mishap..
Cake (technically for christenings but the right colours for us!) and fizz were had, then the house was returned to its original condition and I was on the sofa by 8.15pm! Now that wouldn't have happened when we were in our 20s and 30s! x
