Aah - you've just gotta love New York. What more perfect place to go and celebrate Janine's 'Big' birthday? The sun was out, the air was crisp, the sky was blue, it even sprinkled a light dusting of snow – then pissed down as we were already sitting on the plane to go home – you couldn't have had a more perfect winter weekend.
And we made the most of it – my feet are still killing me. Walked up and down the length of Manhattan, hit every Thanksgiving / Black Friday sale in town and gained new names:
Hawksey 'Best Bargain Ever' Ralph Lauren wool man-coat ($99)
Scotty 'Three Coats' - two of which were an inexplicable $30 each – and really lovely
Janine 'Barney's Boots' – her favourite clothing item from her favourite store, perfect birthday karma
Ross 'Fleecy Workshop Shirts' – we hunted and hunted – and finally the boldly checked suckers were found.
And in between we went to basketball at Madison Square Gardens, tried out a new piano bar (Marie's Crisis – still not a patch on the old Rose's Turn but knocked out a few Les Mis numbers to keep this old goat happy), visited the very good although obviously sombre 9/11 Memorial and Museum (they've done a really good job…. but phew, a toughie), watched the skaters in Central Park, had some stonking meals out and admired the incredible skyline from our apartment roof, watched over benignly by the Empire State Building..
A fab weekend – and a fitting way for J to see in the new decade (40 again, hey?)
