Just back from a very nice week in the Canaries – this time checking out Tenerife. Never been there before (so yes, am adding this one to my countries tally) and we picked our little slice of it well I think.
Stayed in El Duque, in a little house with pool, so our own space to sunbathe, read, bbq and drink cocktails while watching the sunset… Much more greenery – palm trees, cacti etc – than we found in Gran Canaria, so a pretty little place.
A great 12km seaside boardwalk just minutes away, so we yomped to Playa las Americas (eek) in one direction and to nice little La Caleta the other way. H in charge of keeping up our speed on the route march…
He even managed to drag me up Teide mountain, on one of the steepest roads either of us has ever seen, bloody terrifying. Worth it though for the great walk up by rocky crags and over the volcanic lava field. The weather closed in on our return and honked down about ten seconds after we had luckily got back into the car.
Best meal while we were there was hands down our visit to Tejao fishing village, which has about 8 fishy restaurants and very little else. Always slightly worrying ordering at a fish counter where nothing is priced, but we went for it – razor clams, king prawns, scallops, white fish, squid, all whisked away and grilled to perfection. This is only part of it below.. Las Delicias del Mar it was indeed!
Add in bread, dips, fries, beer, water and a big salad – we were totally stuffed. And wondering what the ££ damage would be… Both our guesses were way off – got the lot for a crazy barg of £25 a head. Fantastic! Staggered out from there to the rocky outcrop by the water where the wind was blowing a hooly, (check out my whippy hair!), just enough to wake us up from the amazing fish coma.
All in all, fab to get winter sun on the old bones and to actually read three books and not do a vast amount. Am still laughing at H's reaction when he was served the smallest 'one small beer please' in the world!
Next Canaries stop – Fuerteventura I reckon. Jan 2025 maybe? x
