Had a last minute invite tonight to join Curly, James and one of their boys, Jonny, at the Castle pub in Tooting. Where, of all things, there is a large Bake Off style tent complete with ten cooking stations.
Total hoot making marshmallow cones, which is much harder than it sounds. Hence my first one as it came out of the oven didn't quite make it off the rolling cone device – cue one pile of yellow coloured sad cone material, which had to be torn off rather than sliding out gracefully into the waiting cone holder.
Curly's were much better – I like to think she learned from my evident mistakes. A natural in the kitchen I am not, but actually once you stuffed them with raspberries etc and put fruit puree in the marshmallow mix, they were almost edible. Obviously I forced two down, just to be sure. And chased them down with some of the Tangfastics which were probably meant to be decorative options but were much better put to use as mid-baking snacks.
Lots of close competition from the man table, with a fine array of chocolate cones, though somehow – seemingly impossible – neither our duo nor theirs placed in the top three tonight. Ludicrous bit of judge fixing, clearly.
Thanks to Curls and James for a spontaneous few hours of bakery fun. Am now home, and for some reason, on a bit of a sugar high… how did that happen??! x
