Claire popped round this morning, equipped with white bin bags as that was today's need, many thanks. Made me a bit of tuna on bread for break, topped up the water glass, got Scrumpy's ball out from under the sofa, gave her a Jumbone, gave me my tablets in yoghurt, lined up some face cream (my eye area is currently a crusty cesspit) and generally got me sorted for the morning.<\/p>\n
Had a couple of hours on the sofa with the lovely microwavable back warmer round my waist. Takes the edge off the pain a touch. Told Scrumpy off as woke from a doze to find her scoffing the last dozen pieces of penne that I'd not managed to eat for lunch straight off the coffee table.<\/p>\n
Then, with fingers crossed for a good discussion, headed up to see the back surgeon at Parkside….<\/p>\n
Quite a short consultation – he compared an MRI that I had in Nov (discs all grey) and the one from yesterday (disc above the ones he put the screws\/rods into in Dec – this one now glowing white). <\/p>\n
Conclusion: I have an infection of the bone, called Discitis. Definition from Wiki is:<\/p>\n
Discitis is inflammation that develops between the intervertebral discs of your spine. These discs are located between your vertebrae. The spaces between them are called intervertebral disc spaces. Swelling in these spaces can put pressure on the discs, leading to pain. Discitis is relatively uncommon.<\/p>\n
Well no shit. Super special needs Scotty yet again scores something unusual. Why does this keep happening????<\/p>\n
And – joy of joys – the treatment is 2 huge capsules of antibiotics to be taken four times a day. For the next three to six months. In yoghurt. You are shitting me…. I kid you not. This feels like endless hell.<\/p>\n
Said he thought the antibiotics might start having an effect in 2-3 weeks' time. I practically crumbled at this point as just can't do another few weeks in pain like this.<\/p>\n
So we are now back in room 302 of the main hospital, waiting for the pain guy to come round and see what the pain management options are. I'm not feeling too confident….<\/p>\n
5pm: Paddy (the pain chap) has just been. Given my difficulties in swallowing he has prescribed some pain patches plus some under the tongue dissolving tablets. The patches will give me an underlying base of pain protection (although he has to start with the lowest dose then build up if this doesn't work, so I can foresee the next few days not being fun until I can possibly get some higher strength ones).<\/p>\n
The tablets should – providing I can tolerate them dissolving – give me a quick bit of pain protection, as they go straight into the blood supply via the mouth. So every time I need to get up or turn over, I have to take 2 of these first, to hopefully knock off the sharpest bit of the pain.<\/p>\n
God knows, could work really well or I could be pissing in the wind still. <\/p>\n
Heading home now. Antibiotics and pain pills here we go x <\/p>\n
