Apparently H's dad was based in Gib for a while in his navy days, so he was keen to go and have a look. And as we are less than 2 hours' drive away, we headed off there yesterday for a look.<\/p>\n

This was our first view of the beast itself – amusingly just about at the spot where the Spanish had finally – and clearly very begrudgingly – put up the first signpost mentioning it at all. They are not happy that its not theirs! Looked pretty enticing, shimmering in the early Feb sunshine.<\/p>\n

We weren;t sure how hard or not it would be to get over the border but one wave of one of our British passports and we were in. It be greeted immediately by a petrol station costing only 88p per litre and a sign pointing to Waitrose! As well as red phone boxes, litter boxes and generally everything English. Odd after several weeks here and me constantly preparing to ask for things in Spanish, to be back in Blighty-on-sea.<\/p>\n

As Gib is all about 'the rock' we headed straight up it by cable car (see shadow!) to the top for a look around. Cue immediate squeaking (from me) as a bloody Macaque grabbed me from behind and squeezed my leg for a ride. I've never liked monkeys that much (sorry Mikey) and that was just too close for comfort..<\/p>\n

Amazing views though – to the right, a bit of Spain. And to the left – Africa! Much closer than I'd expected. And tankers and shipping a gogo in the water.<\/p>\n

H by one of the many furry beasties up there – at a distance that didn't invite it to climb on his back (unlike the woman with a backpack on, and a wee ape on her trying to open it up..). <\/p>\n

Came back down and had a very nice lunch waterside. But you could tell it was 'England' again – Spain is SO much better value! <\/p>\n

Drove round the island to see the big mosque, lighthouse and the manmade beach. All pretty but I could never live here – everyone is squeezed into a small land mass, mostly in ugly high rise blocks. Only if you're on the run maybe?<\/p>\n

And you can't leave a sunny island without a Mr Whippy can you?? Slightly surreal – and the 'Here's Johnny' on the side was a little bit off-putting!<\/p>\n
