Just back from 2 weeks with Fi & Rich, riding the ocean waves (literally, bloody massive winds and seas! Note to self – think twice about going late Sept into Oct..) and popping round the southern islands in Croatia.<\/p>\n

Luckily we had mostly pretty good weather – a decent amount of autumn sun in the daytimes and just a bit of a chill come the evenings – deffo time to slip on a fleece as we headed to the deck or ashore for beers or cold G&T's, courtesy of the new ice maker machine.<\/p>\n

Made the slightly mad decision to get down as far as Dubrovnik, which I'd not yet seen, and I hadn't quite twigged this would mean one 9 hour sailing day and several other 5-6 hour ones too to get us back. Dubrovnik was – phew – bloody gorgeous. Walked around the city walls together, stopping for a drink or two to admire the view and check that the boat was still anchored safely in the bay, right outside the Old Town – what a mooring! We are the white blob to the left of the single dark boat further out, almost being 'pointed at' by the left side lump of rock. Rumour had it that you can be charged 100-150 euros for the privilege of popping your metal hook in the sea there, but perhaps that is an in-season thing, we didn't pay a thing.<\/p>\n

\"IMG_5507\"<\/a>One of our best cocktail moments was in Dub – in a fab sunspot on a rocky outcrop, with our back to the city walls – several Aperol Spritzes (them) and Mezcal Tequila Coconut Thingies (me) later, all we could manage was a burger to soak it up and then headed in the dinghy back to the boat. Closely followed by the rampart drinks we had atop this ancient tower – involving climbing a near vertical ladder with a tiny gap at the top to emerge onto its roof, and the drinks being delivered on a pulley system up the external wall as there was no way they could come up the ladder as well!<\/p>\n

Spent lots of hours chatting with Fi, always a joy and even managed to snaffle two fabulous foot rubs from her – those hands are truly gifted! Rich & H get on really well, taking the piss out of each other in boy fashion, and Rich seemed very chuffed with his birthday decorations (no mean feat in that wind!), bottle of Taittinger fizz and Waitrose cake – lovingly brought in my hand luggage and almost still in one piece. <\/p>\n

Fi & I also knocked out the Bodgit Song in honour of R's birthday – the Bodgits are what the boys call themselves as they tackle various DIY, electrical, cider-making etc tasks, with varying success. Sung to the tune of A Finger of Fudge, it was slightly below the level of Fi's usual classical choral performances but right up my rhyming couplets alley.<\/p>\n

We also nailed 3-4 other islands, with Stari Grad on Hvar being our favourite little town and several places vying for the title of nicest bay. Only had one run in with an aggressive ferry trying to literally knock us off our anchorage, before later almost mowing Rich down as the three of them swam back to the boat from the end of a beach – I had volunteered to drive the dinghy back so was spared the trauma!<\/p>\n

I'm still not an absolute lover of all things boat – especially in those high seas on several days – but the company was excellent and there were many fab moments that we will remember for a long time. <\/p>\n

H is going back in 2 weeks to 'winterise' the boat – sails off etc and to put her to bed for a few months. The vague plan currently is that he'll sail the boat to Greece next year where I might join him. A spot of leisurely island hopping in the Greek summer sun sounds like a decent plan..
