So, Mr H & I have been self-isolating since Monday now, only the first 4 days of what I suspect is going to be quite a long haul chez Dora. But as the quite-correct pop-ups on FaceBook (source of all wisdom) say, at least we are just being asked to stay at home, while our grandparents were asked to go off to war. Our war is just against this invisible threat, which I really hope we somehow manage to avoid.<\/p>\n
And with the joyous double whammy of not only being on chemo (not sure how that's going to be administered going forwards, 3 times a month) but also having blood cancer, I am in the top risk group and H is in the moderate risk group – ah well, I've always tried to be a high achiever…<\/p>\n
So, we are home and only nipping out once a day – hoods raised and watching fearfully – to walk Scrumpy in the great wide open spaces of the Common, for as long as we are still allowed to do so.<\/p>\n
Already going to Waitrose, choosing food and seeing people other than on a screen, seems like a long ago dream -in just 4 days! <\/p>\n
We have had to ask my poor sister to move into her flat as the risk of her seeing builders, people in shops etc was too much to take. Weird, but then these are very weird times.<\/p>\n
But it's given rise to some early kindnesses – Cathy hunting high and low for things like eggs, bread & milk for us, and she's made several deliveries in just the past few days, to the doorstep. Henry over the road took Scrumpy to the vet for us last night, for her check up, and also dropped off a mini food parcel today.<\/p>\n
And of course there are kind offers of future help which we are stockpiling for as and when! It's H's birthday next week (planned posh dinner out and hotel already cancelled obvs) and I'm hoping the butchers will have something they can drop round – they too have already agreed to do doorstep deliveries as we can't go out. But they are also already short on many things – I wonder when the next time we see a roast chicken will be? Hopefully they will have some nice meaty piece for H's alternative birthday 'chez nous a deux' night in next week. Good job his super anal wife already has his prezzies wrapped and ready.<\/p>\n
At the moment we are still allowed to walk Scrumpy with one friend – 3m away – but with lockdowns I think coming this weekend?? – who knows what the coming weeks and months will bring.<\/p>\n
So, let's get on WhatsApp video calling, FaceTime or whatever and keep in touch, I may not have much to offer beyond tales of Mojo licking the butter or the lint rollers I found when tidying up the cleaning cupboard, but we're all going to have to improvise for a bit!<\/p>\n
And my highlight of the week is coming up in an hour's time – off to Parkside to have my back stitches taken out. Which now involves me waiting in the car in the car park, being phoned to say they are ready and then pegging it into a treatment room and back out again sharpish. Just hope the stitches are fully 'cooked' and ready to say goodbye. And to being able to get in the bath again – it's been showers for 2 weeks – now that would make these longish evenings once we've guzzled dinner in boredom at 6pm – feel nicer.<\/p>\n
Who knew that something like that could be the most exciting thing in a day? But these are new times and my god will we appreciate even being able to go back to the dentist (had to cancel that too this week) when the doors re-open again and tinned tomatoes are even back on the shelves.<\/p>\n
I'm also open to sitting in our drive with a cup of tea if you bring one in a flask and want to chat from the other side. See – mad, me. Let's do it before the shutters come down x <\/p>\n
