So nice that life is starting to feel a tiny bit more normal – not exactly the fluid happy times of old but buoyed up massively by the pleasures of seeing people in the flesh, rather than on screen.<\/p>\n

Mr H headed out to Dorset this week with Jules, for a 3 night torture trip of cycling up different hideous hills, to their normal ones. 180 miles later, a massive pie, several pub lunches and a pint or two of precious amber liquid, he returned yesterday feeling rather spud of his mamilian efforts.<\/p>\n

I therefore headed south for sanctuary – yet again, thanks guys – at the cottage. Lovely bit of weather, a new walk for the dogs (and us) to and from a pub in a village called something like Fuckery, I honestly cannot remember what its name actually was. And of course some fine outdoor dining. Lamb, as always, magnificent, especially with garden spuds, runner, green beans and a cheeky yellow courgette.<\/p>\n

And Scrumpy – after the events below – spent much of the 2 days fixated on Ross's tomato crop – one of her favourite 'dog buffet, I'll just snatch a few at head height as I'm passing' treats. Hence Ross having to box them in to prevent canine thievery…<\/p>\n

Although there was a major mystery to be solved, which had me foxed for days. I went for an optician's appointment on Thurs lunchtime, then picked up Scrumpy – who seemed totally as normal – and headed straight off to the coot. On arrival, she belted out of the car as she always does – she loves the coot too. However this time she headed straight for the water bowl and guzzled its contents four times in a row… most odd.<\/p>\n

And then legged it into the garden – thank god – where she then threw up hugely, three times. Trying to work out what on earth was wrong with her, lucky Mummy picked her way through the puke, bypassing the diced carrot (really) and apple chunks, to pull out about ten bits of thin silver tin foil. With yellowy-orange writing on. Which appeared to spell out the word O – X – O……. <\/p>\n

Had the beast really eaten a handful of Oxo cubes? And if so, where the hell from? Ours are kept in a shut cupboard on a narrow shelf – which I had opened that morning to get some cereal out – but surely she couldn't have hoiked out the chicken cubes without knocking everything else off the narrow shelf?<\/p>\n

Suffice to say, she was a bloody thirsty dog – those cubes are highly salty – so we kept a close eye on her and she only threw up one more time. Annoyingly on the only carpet in the cottage, but luckily she turned straight round and ate it all back up herself so I just needed a spot of light Vanishing to erase all traces. Hey, non dog owners, glad you haven't got one at this point??<\/p>\n

Anyway – we had a nice 2 nights there and came back on Saturday morning. Where I then found out what had happened. When my niece Jess looked after the house 6 months ago while we were in New Zealand, a few of their bits got left behind, which I had carefully been keeping for her, and was planning to handover to her sister Abbie, who was due to come for tea that afternoon. Scrumpy, in true great dog timing, had discovered that in the bottom of the large bag in the guest room upstairs, alongside the oil, Amaretto, jumper, dry goods etc – were the two – yes TWO – boxes of stock cubes, the Oxo ones, plus some Asda ones as well. And had clearly decided to eat THE LOT while I was at the opticians. <\/p>\n

Bloody hell – almost rivalled her eating the two giant Toblerones (different Xmases, luckily), which are also clearly not good for dog beasts! <\/p>\n

Still, it was lovely to see niece Abbie and her hubby Nick here for a cuppa on Saturday afternoon. Great to see them in person and to hear the latest re their upcoming first married home purchase – hopefully going through in late Aug.<\/p>\n
