Can you believe it – I hardly can – that this week is the 4 year anniversary of my second Stem Cell transplant. 4 years!!! How on earth is that even possible?<\/p>\n
Mostly because, like for everyone, the past year has been a total washout. Extra frustrating for us as for the first time in quite a while we have both been very healthy this last year, and so would have been able to travel with ease and few worries. Hence the many lovely trips that were in the diary for last year – all booked and raring to go – and all of which ended up in the pan.<\/p>\n
So starting 2021 with the 4 year roll round is a weird mixture of hopefulness, but still combined with the huge pain in the ass of being in lockdown and the world still pretty much being up Covid's shit creek.<\/p>\n
And what worries me is that it was about 4 years after my first transplant that things started to go wrong last time. Not one single nightmare, but a creeping tide of problems – breathlessness, bone pain, bones collapsing (always a treat), exhaustion, unexplained odd things etc etc. And right now I am about as healthy as I have been in many a year – ironically much of that down to the slim upside of COVID, having the time, inclination, efforts and online support of other fitties (thank you hugely David in Harrogate! And of course, Mr H) – all cajoling me onto the gym mat or to pound the streets and common in the pursuit of some semblance of fitness.<\/p>\n
And even onto my electric bike – which given that it is winter and lockdown, has still been out a whole three times now – costing a mere \u00a31,000 per ride. Boy am I hoping to get that figure down under \u00a350 at some point, then the purchase will have been cheaper than hiring one each time! And of course, all the more hoping that rides will one day be interspersed with encouraging stops at the pub and nice countryside cafes on sunny days….Ah, I remember those… Just.<\/p>\n
But back to health stuff. As the 4 years is now here (and hopefully isn't really a staging marker, as the drugs are different and fingers crossed 'better' these days) I need to stop having 'social calls' with Prof each month (hi, how are you? what have you been up to? How's the man? And the dog? Seen anything good on TV lately?) and switch the tone of the next one back to reality a tad.<\/p>\n
So its time to get his view on a few things:<\/p>\n
Ah, thrilling stuff hey? But it's time to ask, especially as I am now on a 13 sets of treatment cycle rather than 12 each year – making the gaps between cycles smaller and it a bit harder to get away spontaneously. Luckily I am quite good at planning (no, really?) but once travel is more firmly back on the horizon, my Booking Finger will be more twitchy than Scrumpy's nose when Mojo's been in her poo box…<\/p>\n
So we will see. As we are now a mere 1 week post the first Covid vaccine jab, most of this remains some way off, but even a sniff of opportunity is enough to get my hopes back out of the lockbox they have been stored in for nearly a year now…<\/p>\n
