{"id":1781,"date":"2025-12-16T10:41:58","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T10:41:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scottysblog.com\/?p=1781"},"modified":"2025-12-16T10:44:51","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T10:44:51","slug":"hola-me-xi-co","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scottysblog.com\/home\/hola-me-xi-co\/","title":{"rendered":"Hola Me-xi-co!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just back yesterday from a very nice 2 weeker, driving ourselves (much further than we had anticipated, over 2000km!) around the Yucatan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Far fewer US tourists than I had thought, as we steered clear of Cancun, Playa del Carmen etc, to the point that we hardly saw (or heard) an American, and there were not that many other visitors &#8211; a smattering of UK people, Europeans and in the whole, mostly Mexicans. A max of 2-4 other people at any time, so very peaceful and we found a range off those where you can see the water from the top (&#8216;open&#8217; cenotes) and where you go down pathways into the caves and find water at the bottom (the &#8216;closed&#8217; ones). Some with huge high ceilings and stalactites, others where the roof was only up to a metre above our heads. But with either the sun beaming in or some subtle lighting, blue crystal clear water throughout. But &#8211; go in at speed at the 8am opening time with a guide &#8211; and it was actually really good to hear its history, see the different areas and nab your photos before the coaches and hordes descended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also headed round various other ruins &#8211; the only one we got to and couldn&#8217;t get into, after a 10km narrow road with endless giant potholes trying to eat the hire car, were the Ake ruins, as it honked down and even we were beaten back by the torrential rain. Some cracking green and then orange striped iguanas in the trees were a bonus. Which we tested multiple times in every location, even on our Tequila vs Mezcal tasting evening in Merida which was both informative and funny, as we got through the 8 drinks plus 2 cocktails it included! Lovely beach and an Insta-friendly sandbar to walk out onto &#8211; both H and I now have battered toes from wading so far along it in our water shoes&#8230;. Plus several house iguanas &#8211; this one lived in the rock clump by the pool where it sunned itself each day &#8211; and even a family of raccoons that strolled by at dusk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All in all, Mexico was maybe not our top fave place ever (the food is very same-y and the meat quality not great as its a poor region despite the tourism, and yet the prices in restaurants are pretty western) but it ticked the winter warmth box and there was plenty to see and do, so mostly as good choice for a Dec getaway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/scottysblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/C7CD017B-B49E-448B-9A70-AEF52AE7FD86_4_5005_c.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1821\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scottysblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/C7CD017B-B49E-448B-9A70-AEF52AE7FD86_4_5005_c.jpeg 480w, https:\/\/scottysblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/C7CD017B-B49E-448B-9A70-AEF52AE7FD86_4_5005_c-300x225.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now back into the pre Xmas rush &#8211; the joys of chemo, getting the tree up, wrapping prezzies and seeing people &#8211; and of course getting Maddie back from my chums Fiona &amp; Peter who kindly had her while we were away.
