I'm aware that I mostly bung life stuff on here these days. Which is mainly as I'm ticking along ok still (famous last words, hopefully not..).<\/p>\n
But I thought I should probably pop a medical update on here, as it's been a while. And because the pictures of sunny hols and nights out on here aren't a very accurate picture of life as it mainly is.<\/p>\n
So – I have now been having chemo – 4 separate doses of 2 different drugs, delivered on 3 visits every 4 weeks – solidly since, oh my god, January 2016. It started then to prepare my blood for my second stem cell transplant, which was in January 2017 – and the bastarding 'maintenance chemo' routine hasn't changed since.<\/p>\n
Which makes it a joyous full 7 years since this regimen began. And that's about 370+ doses of the noxious stuff that they inject into my stomach, since I came out of remission last time.<\/p>\n
But – it is still working. So I can't complain, much as I hugely wish that I wasn't tied to doing this, week in, week out. I'm still alive and am in 'ok nick', if not good nick.<\/p>\n
I have a bigger check up every six months, in the form of a bone marrow biopsy under general anaesthetic and a PET CT scan, where they fill me with some radioactive gunk to show up any cancerous areas throughout the body.<\/p>\n
So far, so good, although the next ones roll round in May, and it's always a nervous wait till the scores are back. One day I won't be as lucky as I have been so far, but hopefully that day is still some way off.<\/p>\n
In the meantime, Prof, who is 85 now (yes, really!) tells me that he is going to carry on for at least another year as he is and then might think about getting someone in the wings to potentially take over his patient list when he gets to about 88. Good grief! It's great that he is still gojng – hats off to continuity of care – but I do worry that he might keel over one day and there will be a waiting room full of people needing their treatment to be signed off, and no other myeloma expert in the CCL house. But we will see which one of us lasts longer..!<\/p>\n
So – here's to all the care and treatment that has come my way over these 14.5 years, enabling me to have not quite (or at all) the life I would have liked to live, but still one that I where I am alive and just about kicking.<\/p>\n
I've just been jabbed again – yes am writing this while waiting for today's dose – so its time to sign off and head home. Till the next time x x<\/p>\n
